Traffic

Gridlock on city streets is of great concern and a seemingly age-old problem. When the bridge was first build, it was estimated that 17,000 vehicles would traverse the blue expanse each weekday. Today we have over 85,000 vehicles moving through Coronado daily. The Navy recently announced plans to increase the length of in-port time of nuclear carriers from 29 days to 180 days in order to conduct more complex and extensive repairs and maintenance at NASNI, instead of sending ships to a shipyard. As your councilmember I will work with our partners to find solutions to mitigate traffic. Some ideas include:

  • Using minibuses to transport shipyard workers to and from the base.

  • Bringing back the commuter ferry to dock at NASNI.

  • Implementing HOV lanes during peak times on the bridge and along the Third and Fourth Street corridor.

  • Establishing satellite parking with shuttle service in San Diego.

  • Expansion of the Island Express mini-shuttles.

  • Creating incentives to expand Coronado as a bicycle and golf cart community.

  • Encourage NASNI to develop carpooling/bus ride incentives.

  • Seek opportunities to integrate Coronado traffic reduction into San Diego’s Transportation Plan (e.g., incentivize public rail transit ridership for military and introduce HOV shuttle to NASNI).
